Mohammed Shami ruled out of South Africa tests due to fitness woes

In a setback for the Indian cricket team, Mohammed Shami, the standout performer in the recently-concluded ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, has been ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series against South Africa. Despite being the highest wicket-taker in the World Cup with 24 scalps, Shami's participation in the Test series was contingent on fitness, and the BCCI Medical Team has deemed him unfit, according to an official press release. This development leaves India without the services of a key fast bowler as they gear up for the Test series commencing on December 26.

Apart from Shami's absence, other significant updates surround the Indian team's tour of South Africa. Following a 1-1 draw in the T20I series, both teams are set to engage in a three-ODI contest. The ODI squad will be guided by India A's coaching staff, including batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, bowling coach Rajib Datta, and fielding coach Ajay Ratra. The Test squad, led by head coach Rahul Dravid, will undergo preparations overseen by the coaching trio of Vikram Rathour, Paras Mhambrey, and T. Dilip.

Additionally, Shreyas Iyer, after participating in the first ODI on December 17, will join the Test squad for series preparations, foregoing the second and third ODIs. On a somber note, Deepak Chahar has withdrawn from the ODI series due to a family medical emergency, with Akash Deep named as his replacement.
